Concussion Management
Concussions can be very limiting to a person’s function and can be caused by multiple factors. Concussions are often times very difficult to navigate and having a medical professional to help guide you through it is very important. Inspired PT’s therapists will do a comprehensive examination to evaluate the source of your problem and develop a functional based rehabilitative program aimed at returning you to the highest level of function. They will take the time to explain their findings and the treatment plan they have developed specifically for you. Concussion management may include:
- VOR exercises
- Vestibular rehabilitation and maneuvers
- Graded exposure back to normal activities
- Balance training
- Manual therapy (Graston/IASTM, joint mobilizations, strain-counter strain, myofascial release techniques, traction, kinesiotaping, massage, etc)
- Modalities (heat, ice, electrode therapy)
- ROM/mobility exercise
- Strengthening exercises
- Return to sport programming
- Education and home exercise program
- Breathing techniques
Common symptoms of concussions include:
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Visual disturbances (blurred, double, etc)
- Difficulty concentrating
- Light and noise sensitivity
- Difficulty with physical exertion and quick movements
- Fatigue
- Difficulty sleeping
Common concussion subtypes:
- Ocular
- Vestibular
- Cognitive fatigue
- Cervical
- Post-traumatic migraine
- Anxiety/mood
